• ¿Quién no conoce La bamba, My way o Bésame mucho? En teoría, cuanto más universales sean tus melodías más fácilmente engancharás al público, que de inmediato se identificará con ellas. Así lo pensaba yo hasta que comprobé que en España sacaba las mismas recaudaciones que en Italia, donde nadie conoce a Joaquín Sabina, Andrés Calamaro, Manolo García o Extremoduro. No detecté tampoco ninguna diferencia en cuanto a las reacciones de la gente. Para mí esto demuestra que no es tan importante interpretar canciones famosas. Eso, por cierto, es un alivio si aspiras a ofrecer composiciones propias. En ese caso es interesante que intercales en tu repertorio algún clásico para que la audiencia no se desoriente demasiado.

• Canciones lentas, marchosas, profundas, festivas, tristes o alegres. Todas funcionan. Lo único importante es que aprendas a leer el momento en que pegan o que sepas qué atmósfera quieres crear. Como siempre, el secreto está en tu propio disfrute y convicción. Eso sí, lógicamente, no esperes triunfar tocando Nick Cave a un corro de niños.

• Everybody knows ‘La Bamba’, ‘My Way’ or ‘Bésame mucho’. Your audience will always enjoy these songs. It seems that the more universal your melodies are, the more they catch people’s attention. Pedestrians identify themselves easily with them. That is what I thought till I realised that in Spain I made the same money that in Italy, where no one knew Joaquín Sabina, Andrés Calamaro, Manolo García o Extremoduro. Nor did I find any difference in the way people reacted to my music. In my opinion this proves that to play famous songs is not as important as one would think. That is good news if you are willing to play your own compositions. In this case, it is a good idea to place them among classic numbers so as not to disorientate your audience too much.

• Slow, lively, deep, sad or happy songs. All of them work. The important thing is that you learn to sense when they will make a better effect, depending on the atmosphere you want to create. As always, the only secret is that you enjoy and feel confident in what you do. Anyway, do not pretend to make a success playing Nick Cave’s songs to children.
